Dan Mason and Thomson Foundation raise social media awareness for local charities

Crossroads Care in the Vale has recently been involved in an exciting new training opportunity thanks to Dan Mason and the Cardiff-based Thomson Foundation.

Dan is a consultant, trainer and on-line editor for the Thomson Foundation. He has been a journalist and editor for more than twenty five years, running newsrooms and media businesses in some of the most diverse communities. Dan became involved in Crossroads Care in the Vale’s work through the Media Trust, and he set up the charity’s website as well as a blog to promote their 2009 ‘Wheels across Wales’ fundraising venture.

When Jo Hendry of Crossroads Care in the Vale approached Dan with some social media queries, Dan responded with his usual energy and enthusiasm by proposing to lead a social media workshop for charities in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. The Thomson Foundation kindly provided the training facilities, and the workshop was attended by fourteen delegates.

Dan gave the group an excellent overview of the range of social media tools available such as Twitter, Facebook and Hootsuite. Delegates also learned how to set up a simple blog. Competition for places on the workshop was strong so Dan ran another workshop a month later. Mark Stillman of the Vale Centre for Voluntary Services said “Dan was superb and it was a real coup to have such a good trainer with a wealth of experience”.
