Craig Yates, Baritone, and Nicola Rose, Pianist of ‘Live Music Now’ proved to be the highlight of this year’s Spring Event held by Crossroads Care in the Vale.

The event, which was held at Penarth Conservative Club, was well-attended by local carers and their dependent relatives, most of whom suffer from memory problems. There was an opportunity to have a chat with friends over a drink and two-course buffet lunch before the afternoon’s entertainment began.

Dyffryn Gardens event supports Vale of Glamorgan carers during Carers’ Week

There are almost six million carers in the UK, with 1.25 million people providing care for 50 hours a week or more. These are just two of the statistics provided by the organisers and promoters of Carers’ Week 2011, which will run from 13th to 19th June.

The theme: ‘The True Face of Carers’ will help identify the reality of caring in the UK in 2011. Carers will be encouraged to reveal their experiences of caring, both positive and negative, in a survey, and carers’ events will be held up and down the country.

Cardiff and Pennsylvania lead way in Alzheimer’s disease research

Scientists at Cardiff University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have discovered five genes that raise the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. This now brings the number of genes linked to the disease to ten.

The discovery was made when scientists compared the genetic makeup of tens of thousands of patients with those of healthy volunteers. It is believed that a person’s genes account for between 60% and 80% of their likelihood of developing dementia in later life, with lifestyle and environmental factors accounting for the remainder.
