Vale carers brave weather at Carers’ Week Event

Charity banners at the Carers’ Week event

Wet and windy weather did not deter carers from attending the annual Carers’ Week event at Dyffryn Gardens on 17th June.

The event, organised by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and several Vale charities, has grown in popularity in recent years, and this year’s gathering was attended by over seventy carers. The aim of Carers’ Week is to highlight the issues and difficulties carers face in their caring role, whilst providing a range of fun and information events for carers to attend.

Crossroads Group tours Cardiff Castle

CAMEO members explore Cardiff Castle

Crossroads Care in the Vale’s CAMEO Group enjoyed a guided tour of Cardiff Castle apartments recently.

Parts of the Castle date back around 2,000 years. The third Marquess of Bute who, in the 1860’s, was reputedly the richest man in the world, commissioned the architect William Burges to design the interior of the Castle lodgings. Each room has its own theme, including Mediterranean, Italian and Arabic decoration.

Age Concern’s success in funding awards to benefit older people

Age Concern Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan has been awarded £25,000 in recognition of its outstanding contribution to improving health and social care among the over-60s in the region.

The charity beat more than 400 organisations from around the UK to become one of ten winners of this year’s GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) IMPACT Awards, run in partnership with health think-tank The King’s Fund.

Cardiff conference highlights dementia research

A fascinating conference on dementia research was held at Cardiff City Stadium on 31st May.

The event was a joint collaboration between the Alzheimer’s Society, Cardiff University and Alzheimer’s Research UK, and was attended by professionals working in the field of dementia and carers who provide support for loved ones with the disease.

Susanne Sorensen, Head of Research at the Alzheimer’s Society, introduced the guest speakers who included Dr Simon Ridley of Alzheimer’s Research UK, Professor Julie Williams and Dr John Gallacher of Cardiff University and Professor Paul Francis of Kings College London.
