What is the Older People’s Strategy?

The Older People’s Strategy was initially a ten year programme, phase one of which was introduced by the Welsh Government in 2003. The Strategy for Older People in Wales takes into account the United Nations Principles for Older Persons which are: independence; participation; care; self-fulfilment and dignity.

The Strategy was reviewed in 2008 and the following phase two aims were prioritised: Valuing older people; Changing society; Health; Wellbeing and independence.

The Welsh Government is near the end of an extensive consultation process that will lead to a third phase of the strategy.  A further 10 year plan incorporating a series of actions to address the following agendas is being drawn up: Wellbeing; Age-Friendly Communities; Participation and Contribution; Poverty; Preparing for Later Life.
